An urban symphony that evokes the splendour of mining and coal in the Ruhr area, arriving at its re-invention by the conjunction of art-science-technology. From a technical perspective, it’s the first full-dome feature made entirely with original footage recorded with 360° cameras attached to drones and airplanes, containing 2D animation generated through the visual composition of the footage itself.
Future Ruhr is more than just an immersive experience in full dome format with spatial audio that evokes the splendour of mining and coal in the Ruhr area, passing through its decadence, arriving at its re-invention through urban movements and civil projects, thus tracing an optimistic perspective of the future by the conjunction art-science-technology.

An Artistic approach that could not have been made without shifting Technology; hacking drones with self-modelled and 3D printed an attachment (to achieve smooth fast-paced flying), custom-made remote-controlled 360 camera mounts and cable car, the perforation of the wing of a 30-years-old-aeroplane to fit a self-made 360 camera add-on, made especially for Highways or Roundabouts recordings.
A Bird's-Eye Perspective to show the re-purposing of mining and stockpiles into cultural events, museums, and amphitheaters, where Art has been positioned on top of them, creating new landmarks. Allowing us to show, emotionally, the region from a close-up as if it’s looking directly at the camera; alive, moving, breathing, being transformed.
A re-shape of Immersive postproduction workflows, in both image and sound, with a sustainability render goal of saving up to 50% (less trans-codification meant less machinery usage, less electric power, less refrigeration, less storage).
The digital twin of the Zeiss Bochum Planetarium that we created with 3D Scanners and postprocessing, allowed us to calculate the different arrival times on a specific seat located on the edge area and then simulate the situation at the Sound Studio.
An experimental fulldome experience that needed a methodological approach with heavy technological research to artistically capture the spirit of reinvention of a region in constant change.
