In 2017 Peter Petersen hosted sculpting master Nick Ervinck for a one week masterclass on digital sculpture and organized a special exhibition at world heritage Zollverein, which sparked the collaboration between HBK Essen an FCR.
Starting in 2018 Peter Petersen started to give classes in block seminars - highly compressed sculpture bootcamps, that introduced traditional sculptors to the digital tools of our century. Utilizing the complete arsenal of 3D scanning, 3D modeling, digital sculpting in VR and on the screen, students derive their own workflows to maximize their potential.
Not every tool is useful, and especially artists already versed in traditional sculpting sometimes need a new perspective on digital tools. The haptic feedback and real texture of clay, wood, and metal cannot easily be replaced, but valuable resources can be saved, as well as time and effort for experimenting and testing in digital realms, before going to production.
Over the years many students found a new way to construct and present, as well as finding out, if digital sculpting is really for them. The digital workflows allow fast transporting of ideas into different genre and media, a texture can be made into a song. If one knows how to do it.
