Memorias de un Pasado Presente

This project was originally conceived by Andre Rolon, together with Angel Barreto, Ivan Ortiz, and Nicolás Ríos, during the three-week theoretical and practical residency of EXPYLAB in November 2024.

About Memories of a Present Past

‘Memories of a Present Past’ is an immersive experience that invites us to inhabit the Plaza de los Desaparecidos, a space of memory that commemorates the victims of the authoritarian regime of dictator Alfredo Stroessner.

The project takes the space of “the disappeared plaza” (another translation could be “the square of the missing”) a space created as commemoration of the people who were forcefully disappeared, tortured, exiled and detained by the Alfredo Stroessner dictatorship which took place from 1954 to 1989; place that sits next to the Palace of Governance and its right by the entrance of the Asuncion Promenade yet it's often past by or neglected as a site of interest, and looks to center it as its point of enunciation as an exercise in engaging with historical, numerical and archival memory in new sensitive ways.
